How to Detail Your Boat – Removing Oxidation – Maintaining Sunbrella and Eisenglass

Mike Phillips here in sunny Stuart Florida and today I’m going to go over some tips and techniques for detailing your boat now the first thing you want to do is you want to wash the boat and get a and span clean and to do this you want to start at the top work your way down through the inside and when I’m done with that I’m going to move to the outside and whenever you’re washing your boat you want to use premium quality products because you’ve got a lot of money tied up in your boat so you want to use only the very best now when I start out on that bimini top I’m going to use a Montana boars hairbrush because the bristles are going to be gentle to this fabric material now it’s important to clean it in a way that you don’t make the top you become fuzzy because you’re starting to tear up those fibers and when we’re all done we’re actually going to put some protectant on here to kind of restore that factory protection it came with when it’s new so let’s get started now the first thing you want to do is you want to completely rinse off the bimini top just remove any loose dirt dust and also a lot of times you can find bird droppings up here someone just go ahead and blast this and start getting to clean now after you’ve knocked off all the loose stuff the next thing you want to do is you want to use a cleaner that’s safe for this type of fabric now this type of fabric comes with the waterproofing coating from the factory and so that’s why you want to be careful when you’re washing it you don’t want to use anything that’s too harsh so I’m just going to go ahead and use an approved product and we carry a bunch of these different products here to clean this top and you want to spray this on really well and then again I’m going to use that Montana boards hair brush to gently agitate this and then I want to rinse it till it rinses clear and usually when you’re washing your boat you’re working outside so you gotta move quickly because you want to get this done before the Sun can dry and here’s a little tip before you use the Montana Boris Aires brush always soak this for about 30 minutes it will soften up the bristles make them even more gentle to the top now that we finish getting the top of the booming top nice and clean got all the bird droppings off time to move down and I move on to the console again work our way down now for cleaning the non-skid surfaces a lot of times it’s going to be helpful to use a utility brush like this it’ll give you a little more aggressive cleaning action but for anything I want to be careful with like this wind guard here this windshield I want to use a Montana’s boars hairbrush it’s still going to give me good cleaning action but it’s not going to put any scratches in and here’s a project you’re really going to like this is called amazing roll-off this is an all-purpose cleaner that works great when you’re cleaning your boat now to use this I just want to go ahead and now before I start I want to go ahead and wet everything down with water got a lot of dead bugs up here I’m going to just take the amazing roll off here sort of spraying this on we’ll let this dwell for a few minutes you’ll start penetrating loosen up some of the bugs so that sea salt spray then I’ll come back and agitate it with the brush

okay let’s take this get in here and just start agitating even though the underneath of the bimini top doesn’t get a lot of dirt I want to go ahead and just loosen up anything that’s accumulated under there get up here a lot of dead bugs up here get in here and loosen all this up get this all pretty and shiny again and the amazing roll off can be used on vinyl and Bimini tops also okay and then for the soap dries we go ahead and just blast all this off here’s a little tip don’t stand underneath the top when you’re rinsing it you then you want to rinse that soap off till the rinse is clear we don’t leave any residue behind and just rinse from the top down have to finish one section just continue working your way down now you can see the dirt just peel away builds up inside here these bristles get softer as they get wet so they’re real safe not going to put a bunch of scratches in all your plastic lenses up here or on the console itself okay then before any of that soap starts to dry want to rinse it off now in this particular model with an outboard let’s get a lot of exhaust build-up here I’m just going to take the amazing roll-off come down here and saturate this and we’re going to use a utility brush do some scrubbing on it see if we get this thing looking like new a lot of this stain is going to be permeated into the actual material here so we’ll clean that up and we come back and do some polishing this will get the majority of it off and then as I feel this it actually needs to be clade so we get this thing all washed and dried we’re going to take and use some detailing clay remove all these above surface bonnet contaminants here it will bring and put a wax on here get all signed up that’ll make it a lot easier to clean the future but this amazing roll-off it’s really doing the heavy lifting right now get a little more on there it’s not my brush but just by getting the majority or the bulk of this exhaust residue off here okay let’s give that a rinse transom back here is kind of a dingy gray almost it’s been a while since this thing seen any proper maintenance we get done now it’s going to look like it’s brand new okay

okay day and night difference kind like the name says amazing roll off a lot of times what this cleaner do is it’ll loosen up most of the topical stuff so when you blast with water it’ll just rinse off anyway so brushing always helps if it’s really grimy a lot of it will just rinse off okay now we’ve done the motor the seat the console we ready to start on the floor the inner sides and for that I’m going to switch back over to extendable brush on a horsehair brush like this extendable handle just make it easier to reach these sides and we’ll switch over to just a marine wash soap anyplace this grungy highlight of the roll off now we’ve got the boat tilted up at an angle so all the water will run out and that makes the front the high point so I’m going to start up here basically just want to rinse any loose stuff rinse it off get out of the way and hit the top to the sides real quick then for the places that are extra gun G like right around here go ahead and put some of that amazing roll-off on there let it start going to work up here where you get a lot of foot traffic starting at the top working down and start working that roll off in this a marine wash soap in get this nice and clean make it look like brand-new this will keep it from deteriorating and oxidizing faster because what happens is when you get that dirt build down into that non-skid surface the dirt traps moisture and it’s the combination of the dirt and the moisture that causes it to deteriorate so just keeping your boat clean by washing it often will help to preserve it and of course this having good tools makes the job easier washing your boat isn’t really a lot of fun but just something like an extendable handle brush means I now got to bend over as much and so makes the job easier okay got that part and get the floor rights about here then oh time to rinse off because that sun’s going to start drying that sopa soap off real quick here okay I wash as much as I felt comfortable with now I’ve got it rinsed I rinsed until it rinsed clear that means I don’t see any more studs showing up as the water sitting surfaces here now I’m ready to kind of move back and just keep working my way from the front of the boat to the back straight on there first Padgett ate at the brush then we’ll rinse it off same thing here just a lot of dirt builds up on here sides of this are actually kind of a brown color soon as I run that brush over it you see sparkling white again okay get here are standing so I look at that dirt just peels it right off there I switched over to different boards hairbrush this is actually called a 90-degree and the bristles cover a larger area it’s going to make it easier to get in here between the guard rail and the shelf there get that dirt out of there come down here and get the center sidewalls and I’ll tell you this is a real back saver okay we’re just about done here get this back in the floor inner sides tops here then move to the outside back here though this is the low part of the boat on the hole here on the floor there’s actually quite a bit of grunge built up down here and the non-skid surface I’m going to really saturate that good with the amazing roll off here hit the inside of this chance and one more time back to my brush swabbing the deck

okay that looks clean okay I’m going to jump out start getting the outside let this dry ok well the inside is drying to get the outside and again I’m going to use the amazing roll-off what you see here is just a scum line here that’s going to really help to cut some of that off still going to use a marine wash with my extendable handle a boars hair brush first though I want to rinse off any loose stuff this is a good practice let’s show you another cool little tool this is aggressive what they call a Schmidt wash mitt it’s got a little sleeve here you can put your hand in it or if you just want to hold its little string here so you don’t drop on the ground but it’s a fairly aggressive foam and it’s a too aggressive for a clear coat finish on a car but I think it’s going to do a great job help me get this scum off here oh yeah okay let’s rinse that off I like coming off there see how that looks got most of it off okay keep working my way down and again since you’re working outside don’t tackle too big given area at one time that way you come back and rent it before it dries prints from the top down huge difference and just keep moving down the boat the brake lights here a little bit there we go okay then to get the motor I’m back to utility brush a little bit amazing roll-off come in here and cut all that grime off there then we’ll wash the back part of the boat and rinse it off then get this part finished I’m going to go ahead and get the other side it’ll be all ready to start the exterior buff work going to compound it put a nice coat of wax on it get it really shined up then hopefully go do some fishing okay I’m going to go ahead and finish the other side they’re going to move the

boat inside get it ready to start machine compounding remove the oxidation put a coat of wax on so come on back and check it out welcome back my name is Mike Phillips we’re a auditing show car garage and yesterday we left off with me washing the inside and outside of the boat today we’re going to finish detailing it we’re going to start by machine polishing the outside removing the oxidation putting down the layer of wax for protection then we’re going to jump up in the inside and finish the inside now I have the owners down here so I want to introduce you this is sue I like this is Lonny how are you Mike good hey now how have you owned this boat voted about eight years this is WOD a it’s a 1998 sikraft secret 23 footer mm-hmm okay so now what do you mostly use this for we use it for fishing and taking the family out okay do you go out very often fairly often as much as we can but prying eyes options you like exactly now how often do you wax this thing not often enough have you ever waxed it we have but we don’t really know the proper way to do it sure well when I look at it one of the things I notice is this actually not too bad of shape you know the most common problem with boats is they oxidize and if you think it’s really bad I mean they get all white and chalky when I look at this down the side after we washed it you can see some light oxidation but it’s not too bad so here’s another question I got for you have you ever done any machine polishing no we have everything is done by hand elbow grease plan okay well I’m going to show them how to machine polish this it’s going to make it a lot faster a lot easier getting a lot better results so tell you the truth most the time when a boat like this is in really bad shape what you’re going to do is you’re going to use a multiple step process now that usually includes an aggressive compound to remove the oxidation then you’d use a polish okay that would polish the gel coat to high-gloss then at that point you can go ahead and seal with a finishing wax on marine finishing wax now McGuire’s makes a great selection we have the 3m selection here but I want to ask you if you had your choice to machine buff this two or three times around the boat or just one time around the boat which would you choose we do the one time around the boat okay so for that they also make what’s called a one-step cleaner wax okay now one step cleaner wax what it’s going to do it’s going to clean polish and wax so it can do three things in one step and and that’s kind of nice because then you don’t got a machine buffed about three times and wipe everything off three times so it’s going to save a lot of energy but it’s going to silly give you good results and that’s assuming that’s not too bad a shape to start with like what we have here it’s not too bad a shape so for that we’re just going to use the xmt 360 this is a one-step cleaner wax it’s the xmt this is in the pinnacle line and xmt stands for extreme machine technology so it’s a product line specifically made for using with the machine and this is going to clean polish and leave layer protection on there so we’ll be able to knock this out in one step so that’s what we’re going to use to do the outside of the boat and some of the smooth surfaces on the inside of the boat now you’ve never machine polished correct okay so let’s take a look at some of the machines we have here come on over here now I have four different polishers here and I’m going to kind of run through each one show you how they work and then again I want you to try each one to see which one you like the best now the first one I have here this is called a rotary buffer this thing has a lot of power now professional boutique dealers this is their primary tool and what’s really nice about this is it’s got so much power that if you’ve got a boat that’s really oxidized not like yours they’re really bad you drink this up to know the whole cutting pad and a compound and you’re just going you’re going to chew that oxidation off really quick and get the job done pretty fast now this tool is a little bit heavier it actually takes some experience to get good results so since your weekend boat Detailers I’m going to start you out with some of the easier to use tools but that is the rotary buffer now right next to it this is called the Flex 3401 forced rotation dual action polisher now that’s a lot of worlds but words but let me just kind of show you what that all means this is forced rotation so now I grab this pad and rotate this it’s under tension okay the gear unit in here it’s all one it’s all tied together so when you turn it on is going to rotate and oscillate no matter what you can’t stop it I’ll kind of show you what that means when we look at another tool but when you turn this on it’s going to rotate it’s going to make little circles inside that rotation and it’s got a lot of power but it’s a lot easier to learn how to use than say the rotary buffer now I have this one set up with a six and a half inch pad and I’ve got another one set up here with a small backing plate so we can put a five and a half inch pad so you can kind of match the pad size to the area that you’re buffing it and what’s really cool about all these tools that I’m showing you today is these are dual use tools so if you’ve got a boat you probably got a

truck RV SUV a car not only could you buff out your boat them but you could also machine polish and wax your cars if you want to tell the same pad all you want to use you can use different pads and that’s a good question I’ve got three different types of pads out here these are actually called the hydrotech pads and let me just kind of walk through it because a lot of times this kind of confuses people the in every company has their own color code but at Auto geek dotnet that’s a good place to go to ask questions on our discussion forum of course I’ll be up there answering them but these are called hydrotech pads that are a closed cell foam and what that means is liquids are less likely to penetrate into them so what that’s going to do is it’s going to trap that chemical against the hull here and the pad and that’s where you want it so that’s why I chose these today now the orange this is called tangerine actually this is a polishing pad the cyan is a cutting pad now if you feel this feel out sharp that feels so it’s a lot more aggressive and then the tang of the Crimson is a polishing pad it’s very very soft feel that you can also tell when you squeeze them that this one’s got a lot less density to it and if you come up here to the cyanic cutting feel how dense that is so it’s important to pick the right pad for what you’re trying to do now since we’re going to be doing a one-step cleaner wax and because the oxidation isn’t too bad that’s good for us we’re going to stick with the polishing pads now if you wanted more cut you could use the aggressive cutting pad but you know the less aggressive your pad is the nicer is going to finish out so I think with the xmt 360 nopal tschappat we’re going to remove the oxidation leave a really high gloss finish so these are the the Flex 3401 force rotation dual action polisher now this is called the cyclo and this is really cool it’s got these dual counter rotating heads it’s very well balanced very low vibration it’s also variable speed notice how I turn this on there they’re oscillating very very slowly there’s a dial here sort of turn that up okay but I think you might want to try this first yeah I think you’ll like it it’s really well bounced you got a forward handle back handle the on/off switches right here we’re just going to take and put some product right to the pad and I’ll turn you loose with it and I think you’ll like this tool now not only can you use foam pads on this to buff out a boat or say a car but you can also get brushes and the four different types of brushes fill aggressive that is now fill soft that one is so you could actually use this to clean say a dirty leather seat in your house or in your car and remember that non-skid services at the boat if you had some areas that we’re really grungy you could get in there by hand and clean with a brush but you could throw the brush on the tool with the machine with all the work everything yeah so just kind of some of the functionality the tool itself just by changing the pads or putting the brushes on now down here this is called a porter cable dual action polisher now remember when I showed you the Flex 3401 in fact let’s go grab that let me show you the difference just real close here this is a porter cable dual action polisher this is one of the easiest and safest tools to use once you hold this for seconds you hold that little put a patent on here for you okay now hold the tool and turn that pad see that’s under pressure okay now you turn your pad see how that just rotates easy there’s no pressure there so this is what they call a free-floating spindle assembly and it’s almost impossible to make a mistake now that means it doesn’t quite have the power of this house but as long as you’re using good technique the right patent good chemical you can still do an amazing job on whatever you’re working on now the on/off switch is right up here conveniently located has a side handling component either size variable speed these are actually all variable speeds so you pick the speed for what you want to use this is source at one goes all the way up to six and today we’re going to stick around the five or the six range we’ll see how this working on this gel coat here the very same news at the same time it’s called a power and if you notice see I’ve got a little black marker in the pad one of the things whenever you’re using this type of tool is you always want to see this pad rotating so I put a black mark on there so you can visually see now if you get to a point where it’s just stay in one place then you need to maybe adjust your past you’re holding it flat because you want that rotating that means it’s going to be taken the oxidation off so we want a rotating and again we’re going to this is the cyan cutting pad in the hydrotech line but we’re going to just go ahead and stick with the polishing pads with the pinnacle xmt 360 now over here I’ve got the same tool but look what I’ve done over here I put on a three and a half inch backing plate and that’s going to allow us to put these little what we call a four-inch spot repair pad and when we get to the inside of the boat there’s a lot of smooth gel coating there but they’re smaller areas so we want to use a smaller pad for those okay

now another thing I would kind of share with you you can sit that down there if you want to learn or set it up here anytime you’re working on a boat with some oxidation like this as you’re buffing you’re going to start to see some of this since this is white gel coat you’re going to start seeing some white gel coat the dead oxidized gel coat start to show up on your pad and we got to clean that off now there’s a couple ways to do that you see an orange brush over there that’s called a pad conditioning brush so one way is you just take the brush like this hold your polisher and you can just kind of scrape that off in some cases you can actually run the tool just run that rush across there and get that dead oxidized gel coat off there because we’re going to end up wiping off the spent product we want to put new fresh product on as we’re moving down the side of the boat here but we don’t want to keep using all the paths all that gunk fest building up there’s got a cleaner pad now another way it’s called a pad washer now these are really cool because they’re going to really clean your pad they use to use water this is called the the grid guard Universal pad washer this is really good for foam pads or wool pads this is called the system mm pad washer this is primarily for rotary buffers with wool pads but they do a really good job of cleaning pads and as we’re working through here I’ll bring you over here when we need to clean the pass and I’ll show you how to use these tools anyway before we get started this hole here has what’s called bottom paint on here it’s not a glossy surface is actually textured so what we’re going to want to do is we’re going to what we’re going to do is we’re going to take some painters tape we want to tape this off so if by chance by accident we run the polishing pads on to it with our cleaner wax we don’t get any residue on there which would show up is white later on so let’s go ahead and do that and then we’ll start buffing take this sweater I’ll take this one all right okay before we get started we’re going to go ahead and tape off the bottom paint and also there’s a rub rail up here the bottom and the top portions are rubber and again we don’t want to cream those out with our polishing pads so it’s faster to actually tape off a little bit first that way when you’re done just pull the tape off no residue anywhere so tell you what Lonnie why don’t you start here just go from the pinstripe on down after he starts working his way this way why don’t you go ahead and start taping just the lower portion of the rub rail to the bottom of the gel coat there I’m going to go up front work my way toward you okay then we’ll be ready to start buffing okay well we finished taping off the bow here I’ll take that did a good job by the way so now we’re going start machine polishing I have a smock here for each of you thank you this will just kind of keep from getting a splatter on yourself a lot of times in your new machine polishing sees you little spider self that way when we’re done here you can still go out to dinner not have a bunch of wax on you another cool thing about is they got these pockets down here and I’ll show you what those come in handy for so now if you decided which tool you want to try first I think I’m gonna go with that cyclo here the cycle okay I’ll get you set up right here are you up for a challenge I definitely will tell you what I’m gonna do I’m gonna grab some of this painters tape again I’m gonna put a tape line down here I want you to work on just one side then we’ll pull the tape off look at the before and after I want you to show Lonnie just how easy this is ah that’ll be easy to do now which tool do you want to try I’d like to try the porter cable eh okay let me get her going get you set up so first let’s go ahead put a tape on here okay now just stay on this side okay this is the both sides are equally oxidized but if you stay on this side we’ll pull it off and it’ll help us to really see the before and after difference okay grab your tool they’re making right now what we’re using here is the xmt 360 cleaner wax now you can get this in 16-ounce bottles 32 ounce if you’re using high volume like a large boat but if you’re getting it in the court what I’ve done is I’ve already poured it off into squeeze bottles now Auto geek down now we carry all this stuff now here’s what that pocket comes in handy after you put some on your padding just slide it in there and it’s always with you it’s not falling over on the ground spilling out okay anyway so it’s ex pinnacle xmt 360 one-step cleaner wax now when we first started out see how your pads are both dry because they’re brand new and clean so what we wanted is we want to go ahead and take and put some product and kind of this is called priming the pad that way you’re not bringing a dry pad down on the gel coat so it’s kind of messy but you just take your finger and kind of spread it out you only got to do this when you’re first starting out okay because again the pads or these are brand new they’re clean and dry so I put some on there come over here and spread this around and here’s something real important you need to remember sue don’t ever turn the

polisher on until these pads are in contact with the paint you know what happens if you do be splattered all over everywhere ground floor everywhere okay so I’m going to put this in here after we the prime that I’m just going to take and put a couple piece eyes drops three on each pad now remember this is variable speed okay okay get a microfiber microfiber towel here and we’re going to start out by spreading this around on the three setting so right here’s the virtually once you put that on the three okay it’s actually conveniently located so as you’re polishing it’s right here by your thumb so here’s your on and off and here’s your thumb so we’re going to spread it out on the three setting after spread out once you bump this thing up to the highest speed setting which is the six you’ll hear when you’re up to the high speed okay okay put back on the three and as you’re using this what I want you to do is I want you to kind of go down huh and then side to side so kind of a crisscross pattern and only tackle a section a little bit smaller than say two foot by two foot usually like your shoulder width is how they’ve an area you want to buff and just work through a park really good and whenever you’re using the cleaner wax and this is real important whenever using a cleaner wax on a neglected finish like this you want to use the product heavy or wet as always saying the industry you want plenty of chemicals down there lubricating the surface but you also want the chemical cleaners and any diminishing of races in there you want plenty of them in there to cut that oxidation off it’s not like a finishing wax where you’re trying to put down a thin coat you want a lot of product on it because you aren’t working for you so anytime your buff and you start to see you’re running out of product to stop put some more product on if you start to see your pasture really white will clean the pad in the pad washer okay see to it I want you to turn it on I’m going to guide your hand they’ll turn you loose go okay spread the product down now bump it up to a higher speed Sonny keep the pads gets to finish there you go you are Oh but this movie okay let’s get you going money while Sue’s down there go and psycho with the cyclo let’s check out the 4k alright now as I said before this is what we this has what we call a free-floating spindle assembly so it’s not direct drive so the Paget spins in fact a lot of times I like to show people this watch this I want to hold apart and that’s because it’s not when you turn it on it’s not going to instantly start to rotate let me just show you how safe this is though tell you what you’re a pretty strong guy take and put that on the five settings okay I want you to take put that right against my hand push as hard as you can sure yeah I got hurt not gonna hurt all right let’s see how safe the tool that’s amazing yes no way you’re gonna burn through or put any swirls on you’re using a tool like this credible okay so it’s a great tool if you’ve never then any kind of machine polishing is a good one to learn on now this is again where this is the tangerine hydro tech five and a half inch pad the variable speed starts from one goes all the way up to six let’s try the five because we’re trying to remove some of this oxidation a little bit of staining on there right so since this is a new pad the first thing we want to do is we want to prime it okay so to do that we’re just going to take and shake up the pinnacle xmt 360 put some on there like that and again just kind of messy but take your finger to spread it around and what this does is it ensures that a hundred percent of the pad is going to work for you as soon as you turn a tool on and the only guy to do this once you do it the first time you’re using a new pad or say you have a used pad but you washed and let it dry over the weekend so you’re starting out as dry you want to just moisturize it so there we go so it’s all 100% covered and then we’re going to going to take and add like three more pea-sized drops here this will be the part we’re kind of working with and the key to using this successfully is to make sure the pad is always rotating now remember I just told

you I put a black mark there so one of the things you want to do is you want to practice holding it flat against the surface if you tilt it to one side and put too much pressure on one side of the pad that can actually stop the rotation it’s that safe so but the mark what that does is it teaches you to hold that pad flat now when you sort out buff and I want you to start out going back and forth then top to bottom so you’re going to make a crisscross pattern and you want to overlap by about 50% now to give you a good cleaning action of course this is a cleaner polish wax in one step we’ll let it dry a little bit wipe it off and we’re ready to move on to new sections alright so I’m going to guide your hand when we first start just to show you how hard to push down how slow to move it this is called your arm speed usually wanted to use a slow speed a lot of people when they’re new to polishing they hear the sound of the motors going pretty fast and what they do is they try to match it so to get that thing just a cooking across the surface I’m going to do and you actually need a combination of the foam the chemical the pressure and the oscillating action all working on the surface in one place before you move it forward so if you’re moving it too fast you’re not going to get a good cleaning action and kind of as I was telling sue before whenever you’re working on oxidized and stained surfaces you want to use your product kind of heavier what we call wet so you get extra or ample product on there so the chemicals go to work for you ready yep okay place it on the surface don’t turn it on till it’s in contact go ahead turn it on right but oh well down and over that here are your pads rotating really good change direction everything what you want to do is you want to repeat that process five six minutes of the time just depends on town neglected to finish it you’ll start to see the shine as your buffing I can already see it now notice how sometimes that pad stops rotating that means you’re putting pressure on one so it tells you to correct yourself there you go okay let’s turn off after that last pass there let’s wipe off see what the results look like that’s great starting to get shiny and glossy get it huh yeah as you can see over here where we have about this silk dull and kind of feels rough you come over here slick smooth and shiny cleaned polished protected in one step now something else let me show you with that is most people like to use the handle and the handle is interchangeable but one of the things you can do to help keep the pad flat so rotates really well take the handle off now what that does is instead of pushing on the handle where sometimes it’ll cause you to push harder to one side you know if the handles over here now you’re gonna put your hand right on top of the head unit that allows you to push down directly over the buffing pad not actually anyway so this is their technique you kind of play around to yourself okay – I’m an attorney loose back here alright add some more product and real quick let me show you something else now earlier I showed soon how to clean the pad using what we call pad conditioning brushes by scraping us across there here’s another way you can do that this is called cleaning your pad on the fly now this is just a terry cloth towel and the reason Herald’s for second the reason we want to use terry cloth is because you usually has a fairly stout large nap that’s the loop of the fiber and what we’ve got on here whenever you’re working on something that’s oxidized okay this white stuff you see on there that’s gel coat is dead oxidized gel coat that you just abrade it off but if you keep going that’s going to really start to build up on there it’s going to interfere every time you put fresh product on so you want to take and wipe this off and then you want to clean your pad and here’s one way you can do that take the terry cloth towel put this right in there and see how i got my hand kind of around the pad this is on the 5sy Maternity moving us

it’s like my after a few seconds pull it off see the product coming off yeah so you’re the Pats cleaner the excess product is on the tread o’clock towel Iori to go back to work right add some fresh product I’ll give you him there I’ll go see how sue is doing down there remember don’t turn it on until it’s in contact with the service and then the first thing you do is spread the product out like maybe tackle this area right here spread the park out you can do that kind of quickly but once you get it spread out to the area you’re going to work slow down start making very slow overlapping passes okay have at it thank you how’s it going soon hey Mikey guys pretty good it looks really good let me wipe off the wax residue look how easy that wipes off I’ll tell you if you’re working on something big it’s gonna save you a lot of arm strength you know four wipes off easy a lot of parts out there wipe off real hard they’ll tire you out just wiping off the residue tell you what Lonnie once you pull the tape off on this check out a result see what you did wow what a difference look at that oh my god this is just completely dull and flat no reflection no gloss in fact if you feel if you run your hand back and forth you can feel the difference hey I can see myself yeah so even though this is why there’s enough we’ve smoothed up and cleaned up the surface enough that you can actually see your reflection in it and this is clean polished and protected once tablets yeah yeah tell you what let’s turn your tool over what do you see there some oxidation what color is it it’s white what color part were we using pink so what does that tell you that white is it’s the oxidation we pulled off here okay so before you start buffing again we want to take and clean that now there’s two ways I showed you the pad washer and the pad conditioning brush I’ll show you how to use this real quick next time I’ll show you how to use the pad washer so this one here usually what I do is I kind of support it hold the pad and then just kind of draw this across there spin it see that a couple times you got most of that stuff off there yep and this is where your smock comes in handy you’re ready to go back to work ever put some product on the pad don’t turn the tool on until it’s against the finish once you go ahead and pick up here on their sideline and start working this way I can go back and check out Lonnie’s work come on Lonnie you bet now yesterday of course we started out by watching the boat and we started at the top worked our way down and that meant washing the top of the t-top okay now when out of the water of course you’re going to get bird droppings up here so to clean it I use the Montana’s natural boars hairbrush okay because it’s going to be gentle it’s not going to get this all frayed and fuzzy got the bird droppings off then we moved it in here and that’s important because before you treat it you need to make sure this is completely dry now this material Sunbrella comes from the factory with a protective coating that includes UV protection and also waterproof sitting okay but over time it’s degrades and you need to replace it do you have anything that can help me protect it I sure do in fact the part that I have here is called 303 high-tech fabric guard and it’s actually recommended by the makers of Sunbrella it’s a recognized high quality product it’s actually really easy to use all that you go ahead and use that what you want to do is basically once it’s dry is you just want to spray it on you want to give a nice heavy wet coat so you see a uniform saturation over the entire material then you want to let it dry before you put the boat back into use shot yeah go ahead yeah just spray it on usually want to make overlapping passes and then you want to watch and I just want to watch them you can see that it’s equally you know wet and that’s your visual indicator that you’re done this is recommended by the manufacturer it’s we’re actually recommended by the manufacturer of Sunbrella it’s a pretty impressive endorsement yeah it is and of course you know if you can take care of it gets last longer it’s going to reduce your expenses a little in maintenance you know absolutely I’m in money yep that’s it we’re gonna work our way around get the rest of it okay will do don’t fall down Thanks how’s it going up here hey my great it’s looking really good thanks it is it is how you liking the cyclo love it it’s really lightweight Rowling’s you to

handle and and low vibration it is now let me just ask you would you rather go back to working by hand no machine Paul she’s not that hard is it it’s not tell you what we talked earlier about trying out different tools you want to try the Flex 3401 okay I started up here at the front of the bound I’ve been working this way I just want to show you because it’s supported clean your pad off and what do you see there oxidation that’s the white coming off the bow so tell you what before we get started it’s important to clean your pad often let me show you how to clean a pad using a pad washer now I got two different types here this one is primarily for a wool pad with rotary buffers but this is called the grit guard Universal pad washer you can use it with any type of pad any type of tool and the way it works is there’s this grit guard insert in here and there’s what we call water pumps down here now watch see I pump that see that water pump up into the air there so I’m gonna do is I’m going to put this in there and I’m actually going to pump this up and down while I’m running it it’s going to inject the pad with the cleaning fluid then it’s going to squeegee it against the grit guard insert that’s going to pull that excess product out then I’ll lift it up let it run for a few seconds to sling out the water be clean and ready to go so do be just like this I’m going to stick this on about the for setting this is a splash guard list it doesn’t get you all wet okay let’s stop spinning open the lid look at that how’s that look looks so much better it’s a lot better now we’re ready to go back to work okay okay I’m going to go ahead and put since it’s already cleaning condition there’s three drops now with this tool here we kind of talked about this earlier what this tool is going to do is you want to hold the pad flat all the time because it’s got this fairly large orbit that you want it if you hold the too much pressure to one side you know feel like trying to walk in that direction and what that does this teaches you to hold it flat and then you want to do kind of the same thing don’t turn it on so it’s in contact with the pain okay then turn it on don’t lift it off so you’ve turned it off you try – pretty good ponytail about that in the back well you want to try the cyclone yeah it liked it tell you what we’ll let you use the Flex okay well let him come back here try the cyclone okay tell you what hold on to that and let me get some product okay now you’ll use this the same way I’m going to go ahead and put just a few pea-sized drops here and that is you don’t want to turn it on until that pad is against the surface there and then you want to do the same thing just like the poor cable you want to make back and forth kind of crisscross pattern with slow arm movements firm pressure and go ahead and you should start to see the gloss and the shine start to come up as you’re working it but usually want to make four or five six passes depends on how bad the finish is now go ahead and give her a try that’s a variable speed unit so after you get it kind of spread out if you look down there where your thumbs kind of resting dile about that it’s about the highest setting yoga there you go very different than the porter-cable you got – ends up there oscillating roads go to the boss

like super so one of the things about the tools were using here today is they’re not like the old days where they’re big and heavy and bulky and you can probably appreciate that when you’re setting on a work on a vertical panel like this you know cuz you’re basically holding up all your chest muscles they’re a big old heavy tool you can get tired pretty quick here it’s pretty good you did it too bad there Lonnie you’re almost as good as SIL have to walk your do some more yeah that’s funny I’ll get you a chair I’ll get anyone to and we’ll watch her show us how to do the work okay so code on that so you’ve tested up the cyclone the porter-cable and you’ve used the Flex 3401 in the cyclo so let’s get you guys to change you go down that way and try out the porter-cable you come on up here try the Flex reef or one then it can kind of decide which tool you like the best but you can tell they all work don’t they yeah everything’s better than working by hand takes all the elbow grease out of rubbing up that gel coat okay let me get her go first now in the same way we polished the outside of the hull and got it all shiny again now we want to get in here we’re gonna start working on some of the smooth areas on the inside of the bow okay now we were outside the way I told you about the four inch spot repair pad okay and if since it’s smaller it’s going to make it a lot easier to get to these hard-to-reach areas now here’s a little tip the handle on these comes off so you can put it on either side whichever you’re more comfortable with or you can completely take it off and now it’s not going to be up here banging into things and just put your hand right on the top of the housing here it’s plastic it’s comfortable feel no problems now since this is a brand new pad I’ll let you hold this we want to go ahead remember I talked about priming yes okay so we’re just going to use the pinnacle xmt 360 again this is a one-step cleaner wax we’re just going to take and put some on the pad and this is kind of messy but this is brand new we’re just going to take and kind of spread it around you only got to do this once when the pads new after that then you can just add a little pea-sized drop unless you’re cleaning your pad you know like I showed you down there all right okay so now it’s primed okay and now just put a couple little pea-sized drops on there now what’s the most important thing about using this tool make sure that the pad is actually on the surface of your boat before you turn it on that’s right or you stop it make sure so it stopped rotating other your little splatter everywhere now up here where your different instruments are up here look I’ve already taped this off because this is a black plastic housing so just like we taped off the the paint down below the bottom paint I tape this off so if you actually hit that the paddle will cream it out and stain it white okay how about for these electronics here do you suggest and evitable e there’s always going to be places that you got to get in work by hand but what I tend to do if I’m going to buff out of boat is I want to knock out everything I can by machine first and then come back and get what I couldn’t get the pad into okay so go ahead and let’s restore some of the shine and then normally for something like this to make that back but quit rotate there you go now lift it off but I tell you most people they are new to machine polishing they’ll make that mistake one time where they lift it off and throw splatter everywhere then they got to stop and wipe it off and it’s that experience that makes it so they never do it again now usually let this dry to a haze go ahead and just wipe that off how’s that look oh wow

that’s amazing and again anytime you work by machine not only get better results faster takes all the elbow grease out of it solutely looks great Mike thank you it looks good we’ll tell you what you got some more work here to do oh yeah I’ll watch from afar okay hey Mike do you have anything so we can clean up the aluminum here on a boat you bet I do this is called P 21s polishing soap it’s actually a neat a unique way to polish off things like aluminum chrome stainless steel now it comes with a built-in sponge applicator inside the lid let me take that out of here but what you wanted you want to get this wet first and then wring it out so uh what I’m going to do is I actually got a spray bottle water up here I’ll just go ahead put some water going in here work it into the sponge there now it’s wet but it’s not sloppy wet okay then what you want to do is you want to just take and just kind of twist this across the top huh get some soap on there and you’re just going to scrub this and rub it back and forth I’ll let you do it go ahead it’ll kind of mold around you grab the kind of mold around the tube there all right yeah and what this is going to do is it’s going to clean polish and leave some protection behind by sealing it all in one step okay it has a lot of uses again you can use it on chrome stainless steel aluminum inside the house damn motorcycle yeah we do baby you can shine the motorcycle up next Oh maybe just like that road back and forth then take a clean microfiber towel okay go ahead I’ll take the sponge just wipe off the residue look at that that’s shine yeah this looks great yeah it’s actually kind of unique it’s not like a messy paste or nothing it’s just it’s called polishing soap let’s just get your sponge wet rub it in kind of lathers up wipe it off there you go you can finish the rest their lines all right oh it’s great Mike y’all finished over there yes came out wonderful then just take and put it back inside the lid save it for the next time you need it okay you know the windshield though when we first bought the belt it was nice and clean we could see through it but just over time with the salt spray on it it’s gotten really dirty cloudy and we need something to clean it and most importantly not to scratch it that’s right now a lot of times these are lexan and you want to be very careful because even though it’s a hard material it’ll still scratch easy so you want to use a product that will clean without being abrasive and also one always use a clean microfiber towel you’re wiping well we got something over here in the detailer pro series is called Plex saw and this is cool because it’s an aerosol you just spray it on spreading out the microfiber towel wipe it off right tell you what yeah what long in you the backside get to work back there spread your on nice feels good to so anytime your detailing your boat you know not only is having parks that work well important but if they smell good at the same time it just makes the whole job you know a lot easier to do more enjoyable right oh wow I can see it now Lonnie let’s tell me a lot of times in your guarantee the boat it always looking over the windshield right trying to see that’s right now you can sit down actually look through it so cleans polishes percent okay one step wait that looks much better you know as we’ve been detailing your boat one of the things I noticed is the vinyl on your seat here it looks like it’s brand new yet the boats 13 years old we just had the boat reupholster oh okay well that makes sense cuz I mean it does look brand new yeah well guess what that this is actually the best time to put your vinyl on what we call a maintenance program so every time you get off the ocean you know you washed and get the boat all cleaned up go ahead and clean this and treat it that’ll keep it looking new for a lot longer and that’ll save you from another costly investment of reupholstering yeah we definitely they’re supposed to last as long as again well here at Auto geek we carry a complete line of marine supplies and the product I want to share with you for this is made by ragtop it’s their marine vinyl protectant now this contains the most costly UV inhibitor money combined now my friend Rick Wilson who owns this company told me that what this is going to do is give you the most UV protection and out on the water that’s important plus is gonna help prevent staining so what you wanted is go ahead and spray this on okay and then you want to work it in with a microfiber towel okay here you go thank you work that in Mike does this have someone known in it that’s non silk I’m glad you asked that this is make it all slippery you never use a vinyl dressing on the seat and it’s so slimy you know you go around it you go around a corner he followed see right and on a boat especially it’s not

in the car especially give you figure water on there it makes any more slippery now after she filled this going to Phyllis Lonnie that does feel nice is that you’d wipe to a dry finish okay so you don’t leave a slimy coating on there that’s good now this is also poor a lot of times on a boat you’re wearing shorts or a swimsuit and you when you have your leg against a vinyl of course you’re going to perspire and they’re salt and acid and moisture in there and of course that if you get any kind of dirt or stains on there helps to kind of grind that in and you get that grungy look so this is going to put down a coating that it’s going to help prevent staining plus the UV protection yeah well that’s how you maintain your vinyl and again the most important thing is put your vinyl on a maintenance program so you’re treating it regularly a lot of people what they do is they wait till it’s completely shot then they try to find something to save and by that time it’s too late so actively maintaining the surface right that looks good yesterday like when I was watching the boat as using a product called amazing roll-off now it’s working really good to cut off the exhaust fumes that have built up on top of the engine cover here but there is still a lot of fill this there’s still a lot of contaminants it gives it that rough texture feel so detailing clay is something usually is in the car world but you could use it in the marine world and the way it works is we’re going to use the Detailers Pro Series Universal detailing clay this is a whopping 200 grand bar a lot of times you can tear a knife like I’ve done here and only use half and say they don’t have for another detailing session this is the Detailers Pro Universal detailing clay Lube which what it is you want to spray some right onto the air you want to clay put some right onto the clay patty itself then you just want to come down here and basically with a fast movement just kind of rub this back and forth okay I’ll let you try alright and what this is gonna do wait a little more on there there you go what this is gonna do is what it actually does is it kind of a braids offs with all right yeah well what it students it’s of braiding off those contaminants okay and they’ll end up on the claim for that reason what’s all you want to need it and the footage of the self exposed some fresh class wipe this off okay now feel that felt smooth that answers so took off all the texture that was on there and if we had now removed that we came up with a silver sheen polish that make a look better but those contaminants from the way so clay and removed contents and now we use that xmt 361 step cleaner X you can go right to work over the entire thing cleaning pause okay looking back working all right I gotta tell you soon what fabulous a completely mastered the porter cable so that is all three tools which would be like the best what’s nice about that again is you can get results small pads on type parturition there how are you doing down there I just made my last pass well tell you what if you’re done down there let us jump down we’ll pull the tape off give it a final wipe check out the results good right looking good well that’s it for the tape Mike okay I see she’s gonna behind you sometimes you know you got to get at a little bit of angle when you’re working on things that are white because it’s kind of hard to see that last little trace of Wax looks like you’re getting it all though yeah looks good how does that look compared when you bought it yeah it looks ten times better than the day I bought it well it looks good hey you guys are great boat Detailers by the way thank you thanks for the help well tell you what let’s recap real quick okay so first on the interior we learned how to clean and protect the sunbrella material on the t-top okay then we learned how to polish the aluminum using the s100 polishing soap then we learn how to protect that brand-new recovered vinyl seat you just had done up and we use for that we use the rag top okay vinyl protectant and then when we moved out to the outside hero we also got the learn how to use the Plex Plex all to clean the windshield okay so the number of different things on going on interior it’s all done and then we move to the outside here tackled removing the oxidation polishing and sealing all in one step now a lot of times if it’s in really bad shape you’d use a multiple step system or a compounded for heavy oxidation then polish it and then seal that’s three steps that means go around the boat three times but since it wasn’t a too bad a shape we went ahead and uses the pinnacle xmt 360 one-step cleaner wax and then we learned how to use three different tools now after you had some time behind each type of tool which one did you like the best they’re lying I think I like the Flex better I like it add more power and I thought you got more done with it the Flex 3401 okay how about you sue this was the porter-cable I really like to do is lightweight real easy to handle

I really enjoyed using it and it took all your fear out of machine polishing today right now of course you could use these same tools on your car truck SUV or RV or motorcycle we also learn how to clean pads we use the pad conditioning brush so how to use the pad washer and how to just use a simple terry cloth towel to get that excess product in the oxidation residue that builds up on the pad off there so you can keep buffing clean hey I think I see your daughters are here hey guys they’re here just a time to go fishing you guys missed all the hard work that’s no accident what do you think is a little good it looks really good ready take it down the water well I guess if I get everything out of the way we can pull the boat out you guys go have fun and I guess I get to do the regular thing that’s sweep up and clean up right thank you for coming on down so much it was a pleasure ok let’s give this a bath away
