fuxin studios in the heart of Hazleton Pennsylvania it’s your name is Cody [ __ ] you bye sfp TV and the standard-speaker robberies at gunpoint and people being stabbed for their wallets recent crime in Hazleton is leaving residents scared tonight news 13 talks to a member of the city’s police force about how you can be more street smart good evening and thank you for joining us I’m Nikki cries in for Kristen baczynski a string of robberies and stabbings just hours apart in the same section of the city all of the crime is leaving Hazleton residents scared and some questioning whether or not they’re safe walking down the street tonight news 13 talks to one member of the city’s police force about what you can do to protect yourself three major robberies and stabbings over the course of two days have taken place in Hazleton Alexandra Castro was stabbed and robbed by three men in the area of diamond Avenue in Ultra Street early Sunday morning just a few hours later Freddy Arroyo went through the same thing right around fifth and p streets and the day before that a woman was robbed at gunpoint in the area of Wyoming and oak streets this recent string of crime has Hazleton residents scared for their safety you’ve all heard people say not to go out at night but some folks need to and if you’re one of those people make sure you have a purpose to where you’re going and let people know where you are a lot of times what we see is people going into dark alleys areas where you see large congregations of people where you know you’re letting down your guard by walking in these situations and they make you more vulnerable corporal John Leonard from the Hazleton City Police Department says to be aware of your situation at all times and remember safety in numbers if you have that sixth sense that something is not right don’t go to that location the next thing would be if you can go with buddy you know the chances of a criminal act occurring to two people is far worse or far less than if it’s just one individual but if you are walking alone it’s so important to protect your valuables you can see what happened when I walk with my purse over my wrists the best way to carry your purse is over your shoulder and hold it tightly against you that way if someone tries to rob you they’ll have a much harder time that goes for cell phones as well aka don’t text and walk don’t just keep your head down looking at that item the whole time you know look up make sure you know where you’re going where you’re walking and who’s to front and back of you left and right but if you’re carrying it just to make it look like you’re you know being act actively engaged with somebody else I think that’s a good call but remember if you look distracted you’re an easy target be aware of your surroundings and use common sense firefighters are stressing the importance of getting your heating units checked out now that it’s getting cold outside City firefighters responded to an apartment complex at 1,000 grant street this morning for a small explosion and fire in the basement when crews arrived they found out the smoke was actually steam caused by a boiler that had malfunctioned firefighters say the pressure relief valve blew apart causing water and steam to fill up in the building chief Donald leche go says firefighters shut the furnace down and met with the building’s owner after they found some code violations they’re looking at all violations or you know after electrical and some plumbing issues and all episode that’s what the code office in the third party inspectors right now so going through to see what what is actually wrong with the building and all that the building owners on scene is actually returning back to the senior like this now discussion chief leshka wants to remind folks to have their heating unit serviced and chimneys check now that winter is approaching he also says that a working carbon monoxide detector can save lives and police are still investigating the exact cause of Monday’s early morning blaze on alter Street 17 people who were forced out of their apartments after the building went up in flames right around three o’clock the fire appears to have started on the back porch of the 577 side and quickly spread to the second floor the building was condemned later Monday morning but we’re told it is fixable State Police Fire Marshall’s are continuing their investigation into what exactly caused the early morning blaze the borough of Freeland is getting ready for the winter months at Monday night’s council meeting officials made sure to order salt and cinders for the roads as well as get the salt shed ready officials are also starting to go over finances preparing for next year’s budget council vice-president Bob Quinn jr. says he

does not foresee a tax increase residents also brought up some problems with storm water from the recent heavy rains we are told that council met with the borough’s engineer and with the streets department to work on those issues this week council also moved forward with expanding the borough’s Police Department another full-time officer was hired Jerry Palermo jr. was promoted from part-time patrolman to full-time officer pending the completion of his contract which should take effect November first I think we can pull it off financially some disagree some agree but as of right now with the budget I have for the police department extra I do have budgeted in three spots or full-time police officers Quinn says the addition brings the Freeland Police Department to a chief and three full-time officers and a handful of part-timers now to Beaver Meadows where a part-time police officer was hired a few weeks back and it last night’s council meeting Police Chief Mike Muricy said Officer Matt Williams is doing a great job so far Muricy said that Williams started training last week and has already introduced himself to residents in the borough Williams is a certified police off sir in the boro and could hit the streets soon Muricy just wants to get him more familiar with the area well coming up live at five another wet cold and cloudy day for greater hazleton but folks are in for a surprise tomorrow but first we check out the Hazleton Area School District website where new information was added for parents students employees and the public stay tuned for great local programming all night long right here in SSP TV at seven o’clock it’s the sambal Sancho joins them as he talks about the wings of freedom 730 is inside scoop political analyst Rick Morelli Mike’s a Cosmo dr Davis or outside politics on a local and a national level eight o’clock is feeling good join host dr. district first I’m going to turn things over to acting superintendent dr Francis Antonelli dr. Antonelli um you know look at this book of policies you you have hundreds of policies here in the district um tell me a little bit about the procedure kind of moving from paper form to now on your website for easy access well what we found is that we had much variability in the policy manuals from building to building and that was due to principals retiring and secretaries moving on we really didn’t have a consistent set of operating policies throughout the district i formulated a committee last spring and we work through mid summer to review all of our policies and again there are several hundred policies here under various categories to make sure that they were reflective of current case lon Pennsylvania School Code and in fact also work closely with Pennsylvania School Boards Association in that endeavor the net result of our work is the posting of all of our policies on the school district website hasd k 12.org you can go and by you I mean media parents school directors administration teachers can go to our website and under Board of Education click on the policies link and we have all of our policies now in one central database consistent uniform as I set up the date with current case law in Pennsylvania School Code okay Bobby lots of policies to put up there and keep them updated explain a little bit more about what you see when you see the table of contents and the different policies and the numbers again it is broken down logically by the different categories and you have many policies within asset asset category we’re actually working on a PDF feature where if you don’t know what particular category would fall into simply type award such as dress code and we hope that it would find okay it’s in the pupil section of the other policy and it would take you there because as simple as that may seem but the categories broken out there are some policies out there that our gray areas such as a booster club policy where would that fall which you know the administration knows that’s a community policy but maybe person on the street is not aware where that’s from so we are working on having it’s called PDF indexing where they’ll simply type in a ward that they’re looking for and i’ll find the correct policy for them and as dr Antonelli mentioned the best thing about this is everyone is on the same page now no one’s going to have a different policy whatever’s going to be on the website is considered gospel and that’s the one we’re going to work off of okay now when you go on to the main page of the website um how do you find this this page as the main page you have the different channels listed across and board of education is one of our main channels underneath you’ll find the agendas for the board meetings the list of the meetings and one of the subsets is policies simply click on the policies and then you have a choice of nine different sets as you can see excuse me they actually made it not only eight different sets because one of the things that I’m glad you mentioned that the employee section has now been merged by the psba there used to be a different employee section for professional employees non-professional now they merged it into all one different one kind of employee and that is now what’s listed up on our website okay very good and finally dr. Antonelli um stressed the importance of having this you know up there easy access well again for a school district of our size really any school district it’s very important that policies your operating policies reflect daily practices okay very good well it’s very easy to log on to the district’s website and check out those policies for yourself the website w wh a sdk 12.org for this week super segment I’m Kristina D’Amato and i’ll send it back to you in the studio thanks Christina will no change from Mother Nature clouds rain and temperatures but the good news it’s all going to end very soon tomorrow folks will see something that we haven’t seen for a while the Sun better weather moves into our area in the next 24 hours but tonight it’s going to be a low of about 44 degrees mostly cloudy skies tomorrow we will see the sunshine like I just said a high of about sixty-five degrees which sounds perfect to me tonight’s weather is brought to you by beachbody Justin Mateo independent team beachbody coach he’s featuring his Shakeology drinks stop cravings lose weight and increase energy for more information you want to call 2 337 516 or you can visit any of the three websites on your screen as you’re grabbing that jacket to wear

ssp TV sports on these 13 with Fred far whether jr both started out looking so good when the Rays dominated Game one and I’m being dominated if you remember knocking home runs all over the place got the great pitching performance and they even took the lead in Game two but we’ve watched what unfolded today must win for the Rays in game for taking a look at some of the early highlights and unfortunately some of the early highlights were all texas as you take a look the Rangers jumped out to an early lead first one nothing then to deny think the Rays would come back and cut the lead it would be 21 as they would start making a little bit of a threat they even brought in mr. Moore out of the bullpen which Joe Maddon said he didn’t know if he would start him again but Jeremy Hellickson just didn’t really have it coming out of the shoot today even though they creep closer it’d be Texas that would add a couple of war runs late and so they went into the ninth-inning with kev ave on the short end of things for 22 and there was no magic like there was late in the season and it would end up with texas winning the ballgame and that’s clinching the series they win the American League Division Series and they will go on now and wait to see will it be the New York Yankees or the Detroit Tigers but unfortunate turn of events because you thought the Rays just were the Cinderella story this year they battled so hard in September so a little bit of a low note here as we say but shouldn’t damper what was an amazing comeback by the Tampa rays and it comes to an end earlier today now other games in Major League Baseball well as we said the Yankees in Detroit that games at eight-thirty start Yankees their season is in the hands of AJ Burnett just think about that meanwhile as we’re speaking the National League the Phillies and Cardinals have just started Cole Hamels on the mound for the phils and late tonight it will be the brewers in Arizona of course the Brewers have a two nothing lead in that series let’s go back closer to home here where volleyball action yesterday amber ferry was on top of her game and that was good for the MMI Preppers three nothing straight sets over ger meanwhile let’s take a look at cross country from yesterday where the hazleton area Lady Cougars got a win over lake-lehman and then just thump Tom cannock and they rolled all over Myers so three wins yesterday for the Lady Cougars the boys well they got two out of three they beat like Lehman they knocked off fires they lost a ton cannock so as we said they’ll take two out of three as far as what’s going on today we actually have that backwards it’s Hazleton at GA are mm I is at crestwood that’s the tennis schedule field hockey finds the Lady Cougars playing holy redeemer water polo hazleton is a Cumberland Valley and Holy Redeemer hazleton area down at the Gihon gymnasium and college soccer Penn State Hazleton Lehigh carbon county community college that’s what we’ve got the local scene today of course it’s Tuesday that means its most popular wing night in town all you can eat of our award-winning jumbo wings of bottlenecks they’re just 9 95 and you see all the great baseball tonight what the bottlenecks you’ll enjoy the food you’ll enjoy the 14 flat-screen TVs if you struggle with obesity you know how difficult life can be but there is help the fully accredited northeast bariatric center offers free surgical alternatives for weight loss including the newest minimally invasive sleeve procedure improve your health and enjoy quality time with your family and friends just visit our website for more information or to check dates and times for our monthly informational session you have a lot to gain by losing

that’s right Nicky on December the eighth and ninth we’re going to be holding the Santa’s secret workshop and what we did last year is we had crafters come in so that again we’re helping the local community by having the people who are making these beautiful things come into the school the kids can buy some nice gifts for their family and friends and family and then it helps to school out and so we’re looking for crafters or vendors if you’re something that you sell or may please give us a call over at the school and also on the 9th we’re having a spaghetti dinner so we’d like to let people know that’s open to the community as well and the craft show will also be open to the community this year as well and more details will you know will follow soon with that sounds great so again you want to if you want to get involved with that contact Holy Family Academy and if you want to get involved with the friends helping friends fundraiser here at boscovs stop out to the laurel mall today and all day today you can support Holy Family Academy and other nonprofit organizations all four five dollars and get twenty-five percent off the entire store for the most part I’m Nikki cries will send it back to you in the studio I’m here at the laurel mall thanks Lori and Nicki and Nicki and I will be heading to boscovs later to take advantage of that and do a little shopping and that does it for us tonight thanks for making us a part of your day if you want to catch this newscast again just tuned in to every broadcast throughout tonight and into Wednesday morning and don’t forget we’re always on at SSP tv.com and make sure you check out the standard-speaker calm and the citizens voice comm to have a great night from news 13 be safe and we’ll see you back here tomorrow you no one plans to be hurt I’m attorney Conrad Vell Vell oh and I have yet to meet anyone who would trade their health for money but if you’ve had your livelihood taken away by someone else don’t kid yourself no one’s going to hand you a check at fellow law injury law is what we do every day it’s the only thing we do every day fall valo long injury lawyers feistner for Dan Freeland has the best deals new at bison important to hunter high-capacity open and closed front alignment rack and the road force tire balancer you’ll only get them here we can align rollbacks ambulances fans and construction vehicles and we also offer free alignment checks with any vehicle service appointment bison airport is where you’ll find the best deals on new and used vehicles the best deals the past nine years have been providing Hazleton personal accurate and immediate radiologic services I’m dr.
