Morning Prayer May 10

Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life: such a way as gives us breath, such a truth as ends all strife, such a life as killeth death Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength: such a light as shows a feast, such a feast as mends in length, such a strength as makes his guest Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart: such a joy as none can move, such a love as none can part, such a heart as joys in love welcome again to st. Mark’s Anglican Church Fisher Avenue Ottawa as today we celebrate the fifth Sunday of Easter Into your hands O Lord I commend my spirit Alleluia Christ is risen the Lord is risen indeed Alleluia praise the God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ he gave us new life and hope by raising Jesus from the dead rejoice then even in distress we shall be counted worthy when Christ appears God has claimed us as his own he called us from our darkness into the light of his day Alleluia Christ is risen the Lord is risen indeed Alleluia Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us therefore let us keep the feast the Lord be with you and also with you let us pray Almighty God your son Jesus Christ is the way the truth and the life give us grace to love one another and walk in the way of his Commandments who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit one God for ever and ever Alleulia, alleluia, alleluia! Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us therefore let us keep the feast, Not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him The death that he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God so also consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep For since by a man came death by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! a reading from the first letter of Peter like newborn infants long for the pure spiritual milk so that by it you may grow into salvation if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good come to him a living stone though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight and like living stones let yourself be built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ for it stands in Scripture see I am laying in Zion a stone a cornerstone chosen and precious and whoever believes in Him will not be put to shame to you then who believe he is precious but for those who do not believe the stone that the builders rejected has become the very head of the corner and a stone that makes them stumble and a rock that makes them fall they stumbled because they disobey the word as they were destined to do but you are a chosen race a royal priesthood a holy nation God’s own people in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light once you were not a people but now you are God’s people once you had not received mercy but now you have received mercy the word the Lord thanks be to God Into your hands O God, I commend my spirit In you, O Lord, have I taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; deliver me in your righteousness Incline your ear to me; Make haste to deliver me Into your hands O God, I commend my spirit Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe, for you are my crag and my stronghold; for the sake of your name, lead me and guide me

Into your hands O God, I commend my spirit take me out of the net that they have secretly set for me for you are my tower of strength into your hands I commend my spirit for you have redeemed me, O Lord, O God of truth Into your hands O God, I commend my spirit “My times are in your hand; rescue me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who persecute me make your face to shine upon your servant and in your loving-kindness save me Into your hands O God, I commend my spirit the Lord be with you and also with you the holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John glory to You Lord Jesus Christ Jesus said do not let your hearts be troubled believe in God believe also in me in my father’s house there are many dwelling places if it were not so what I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you and if I go and prepare a place for you I will come again and will take you to myself so that where I am there you may be also and you know the way to the place where I am going Thomas said to him Lord we do not know where you are going how can we know the way Jesus said to him I am the way and the truth and the life no one comes to the Father except through me if you know me you will know my father also from now on you do know him and have seen him Philip said to him Lord show us the father and we will be satisfied Jesus said to him have I been with you all this time Philip and you still do not know me whoever has seen me has seen the father how can you say show us the father do you not believe that I am in the father and the father is in me the words that I say to you I do not speak on my own but the father who dwells in me does his works believe me that I am in the father and the father is in me but if you do not then believe me because of the works themselves very truly I tell you the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and in fact will do greater works than these because I am going to the Father I will do whatever you ask in my name so that the father may be glorified in the son if in my name you ask me for anything I will do it the gospel of Christ praise to You Lord Jesus Christ today as we celebrate the 5th Sunday of Easter before we go into the reflection for today I want to take this time out to say Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there those who are biological as well as those who are not biological because mother is not always through biology but all those persons who have played a profound and great role in the lives of rearing us all happy and blessed Mother’s Day to you in addition to that I want to say greetings

and happy birthday to all those persons celebrating birthdays or wedding anniversary anything of that nature I want to say all the best to you as you celebrate amidst everything that is happening around you the reflection today for today is based upon John chapter 14 the gospel for today and we can look at this particular piece of Scripture and theme it as preparation time what does preparation mean to you as we are experiencing what I call new normals preparation might take on a different face altogether I am sure the youngsters can agree preparation meant before Covid getting up each morning and doing all of the necessary things to make yourself prepared for school each day preparation for other persons might have involved getting ready for work and doing the necessary things to get to work on time to look good too smell good and to be punctual you prepare after each person the preparation might seem to be a bit different so how does this or idea preparation how does it blend in with the gospel for today before we get into exactly how it blends in we must look at the background from which the gospel is written and we cannot begin at chapter 14 chapter 13 actually informs what chapter 14 is really saying to us in Chapter 13 we see Jesus engaging in the washing of the feet not only the washing of the feet but during this time it is said that there was a talk of a story about his betrayal by Judas and it says in the process Judas goes out at night time Judas departs the company at nighttime so it seems as if the scene is being said it seems as if things are coming together and it would justify why Jesus begins chapter 14 in the way in which he does not only that but in chapter 13 we also come to realize the disciples had to face another dark reality and that was the leader of the group would be found wanting the leader of the group Peter himself was called out because it was Peter who was going to deny his master therefore the scene is set so it was as if the ground was shifting under the feet of the disciples and therefore Jesus comes in chapter 14 and says do not let your hearts be troubled do not let your hearts be troubled and how are they going to do this Jesus is saying I am about to prepare you for what is about to take place I am going to chart the way for you as it were in troubling times we all need to experience some form of preparation Jesus begins the preparation by first we witness a conversation with Thomas and what does Thomas say to us in the story Thomas actually wanted a literal roadmap to wherever this place was that Jesus was going and Thomas was saying to us show us this way we do not know what you are talking about give us a road map and what was Jesus response he says look at

me look at me and looking at me is going to prepare you for what is about to happen therefore when Jesus says look at me we are also called to say to Christians around us look at me also as I bear witness to God’s love as I bear witness to who he is in my life can others also say look at me and therefore the call was not only for this hereafter experience but a call is to look at me even now and the second person have a conversation in the story and to further give light to this preparation was Philip and Philip says Lord show us the father and we will be satisfied Jesus said to him have I been with you all this time Philip and you still do not know me who ever seen me has seen the father how can you say show us the father in this second conversation Jesus is continuing the preparation and therefore Jesus seemed a bit annoyed at Philip three years you’ve been with me three years I was walking the streets of Palestine three years I was casting out demons three years I was uplifting the lowly three years I was among you and you still do not know Jesus’s response is I am that one I am that one because the father and I are one therefore if you have seen me you have seen the father and I believe he was also saying to him when others see you who are they seeing how are they prepared to do life even by looking at you but Jesus says in this preparation I am going to leave you but I’m gonna leave you to go elsewhere and going elsewhere he is saying I am going to prepare dwelling places for you now some translations speak about dwelling places yet again there are other translations that speak about mansions I prefer the mansion analogy because a mansion says it is extravagant the mansion says it is great the mansion says it is beyond your imagination and therefore you also have something grand to look forward to Philip Thomas and the rest of you and by extension all of us who would have come after his departure you have something to look for because I am going to prepare it so where I am there you might also be in that particular place we can conclude that Jesus’s preparation also means love I am preparing you as the collect says to us today we are called we are beckoned to seek love out I leave you with a little song that was taught to me in primary school and I hope I remember all the words I will try to recite it to you Jesus hands were kind hands doing good to all healing pain and sickness blessing children small let me watch you Jesus till I’m gentle too Till my hands are kind hands fit to work for you Jesus is the ultimate example of how

to live we are called to live in the same way same way so others can be prepared for this life and the life to come may God give us such wisdom and strength to follow him in this way amen nothing can trouble nothing can frighten those who seek God shall never go wanting Nothing can trouble, nothing can frighten God alone fills us Nothing can trouble nothing can frighten Those who seek God shall never go wanting nothing can trouble nothing can frighten God alone fills us Nada te turbe, nada te espante Quien a Dios tiene nada le falta Nada te turbe, nada te espante Solo Dios basta let us make our proclamation of faith let us confess the faith of her baptism as we say I believe in God the Father Almighty Creator of heaven and earth I believe in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord he was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary he suffered under Pontius Pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended to the dead on the third day he rose again he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father he will come again to judge the living and the dead I believe in the Holy Spirit the Holy Catholic Church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting amen we now pray for the state of God’s holy church and the world in the prayers of the people let us pray saying Lord in your mercy hear our prayer risen Lord assure our troubled hearts that you have gone to prepare a place for us so that where you are we may be also you alone are the way the truth and the life by whom the father comes to us so that through you we have seen him and know him Lord in your mercy hear our prayer risen Lord how often we think that we’re on our own help us to listen to your promises to receive your assurances to let you remove trouble from our hearts and may we always remember your constant presence with us we pray for John our Bishop Shane our Bishop elect Anne our metropolitan Linda our primate Julian our priest and all who minister here let us remember all clergy in these difficult times when we cannot meet together in our church buildings Lord in your mercy hear our prayer risen Lord we pray for family and colleagues friends and lovers for neighbors and strangers for those with whom we break bread at home for those we have missed at work in the community and in our church giving thanks for modern technology which allows us to keep in touch with those we love Lord in your mercy hear our prayer risen Lord on this Mother’s Day we pray especially for all mothers whether biological or of the heart we give thanks for all they have
