The Feast of the Holy Family, December 27, 2020

Hello and welcome to Holy Redeemer. We are happy to celebrate this Mass with those of you who are with us here today and with all those from whom our community we are watching at home today we celebrate the feast of the holy family of Jesus Mary and Joseph [music] me [music] the name of the father and the son and of the Holy Spirit grace of our Lord Jesus christ the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all today we come together to celebrate as you heard the solemnity of the holy family this feast of Jesus Mary and Joseph and we find ourselves also on this second day of the octave of christmas we celebrate all of these days as if it is christmas itself today I think we just do with a little bit less energy than we might have in these last two days which were full of really beautiful masses of people who were able uh coming together to celebrate this great mystery of the nativity hopefully today we do it nonetheless with all of our heart let us take a moment call to mind our sins and prepare ourselves to celebrate this sacred mystery you were not yourself uh oh my God is all right

oh my God see oh [music] let us pray oh God who are pleased to give us the shining example of the holy family graciously grant that we may imitate them in practicing the virtues of family life and in the bonds of charity and so in the joy of your house delight one day in eternal rewards through our Lord Jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit one God forever and ever a reading from the book of sarah God sets a father of honor over his children a mother’s authority he confirms over her sons whoever honors his father atones for sins and preserves himself from them when he prays he is heard he stores up riches who reveres his mother whoever honors his father is gladdened by children and when he prays is heard whoever reveres his father will live a long life he who obeys his father brings comfort to his mother my son

take care of your father when he is old grieve him not as long as he lives even if his mind failed be considerate of him revile him not in not all the days of his life kindness to a father will not be forgotten firmly planted against the dead of your sins a house raised in justice to you the word of the Lord blessed are those who follow you blessed are those who seek blessed are all who fear the Lord and walk in his ways by the labor of your hands you shall eat will be blessed your wife in the heart of your house your your children indeed thus shall the be who fears the Lord may the Lord bless you from zion may you see jerusalem all the days of your life blessed are those who seek you a reading from the letter of saint paul to the colossians brothers and sisters put on as God’s chosen ones holy and beloved heartfelt compassion kindness humility gentleness and patience bearing with one another and forgiving one another if one has a grievance against another as the Lord has forgiven you so must you also do all and all over these put on love that is the bond of perfection and let the peace of christ control your hearts the peace into which you were also called in one body and be thankful let the world of christ dwell in you richly as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another singing psalms hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God

and whatever you do in word or indeed do everything in the name of the Lord jesus giving thanks to God the father through him the word of the Lord uh [music] me please the Lord be with you reading from the holy gospel according to Luke when the days were completed for their purification according to the law of moses they took him up to jerusalem to present him to the Lord when they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord they returned to galilee to their own town of nazareth the child grew and became strong filled with wisdom and the favor of God was upon him the gospel of the Lord so happy feast day a really great feast day for all of us every one of us maybe I could start by speaking to any single people who might be here any unmarried previously married people who might be here this feast is for you too I know a lot of single people who often feel excluded when we talk so much about family and married people but do not feel excluded please you are included in this family of God and that has been his work to gather a family he started with this chosen start with adam and eve a couple through them came this holy people the israelites the people of his own and he continued to gather more and more people to himself he brought about the holy family Jesus Mary and Joseph and through them he added more and more people the jews the gentiles into this family it is the family of God that brings us all together he is our father we are his children so I hope first we can celebrate that and I hope second we can all realize all of us are called to celebrate this feast day of the holy family and that is what we celebrate the holiness of Jesus Mary and joseph and the unity that it brings about as a family for them and the good that God does through it it’s a really pretty great thing to be able to celebrate especially for a parish like this and I guess that’s the second aspect of families unless any of us were hatched we all probably came from families so we have some people to pray for today I think this parish today these days is in a very unique place where this parish is in a little bit of a transition there are many new families younger families coming to the parish with small children beginning their own families and at the same time there are many elderly people elderly couples or widows or widowers in this parish who came here maybe 50 years ago made a lot of friends here with other couples beginning their families raised their families together many of them sending their children to this school watching them grow continuing to come here to celebrate mass week after week celebrating

major sacraments at the weddings of their children the baptism of their grandchildren many elderly people today look back over these years with great delight with the blessings that the Lord poured out on them and their marriage and their family many of us many of you are recipients of the love of really great parents right races we could go around the church there’s just some really great people who have been a part of this parish and continued to be a part of this parish really nurtured by the love of God strengthened by the sacraments informed by the word of God and as a result of this have lived a very fruitful lives and lives of real happiness so I guess I just hope we can be grateful I hope we can stop today to really thank the Lord if you’re elderly and you’re losing anything physical capacities or mental or emotional or anything that comes along with age I hope that you can take these moments to thank the Lord for the blessings that he has poured out upon you to have a family of your own or to be a part of a loving family but I hope we can all thank the Lord for making us part of this parish family you know it just this christmas celebration this year was very unique of course it was sad that not everybody could be here in person but I think in the absence of that there was something very beautiful that happened here on these christmas masses it was just this wave of really beautiful worship to the Lord one mass after another we were very cautious very careful to keep our distance into clean but just think about this church it’s not the biggest church in the diocese it’s not the smallest it’s a small to medium-sized church nestled right in the middle of a neighborhood I don’t know if everybody in the whole diocese knows about this place but you find yourself in here for one of these liturgies and it’s just really beautiful it just seems to be a beautiful place to go to mass certainly the music adds to it the singing I think it’s a beautiful church but then there’s also something about the spirit of all of us coming together to really worship God so this christmas I just was kind of struck pretty much at each mass I was I celebrated too kind of celebrated a few others and I was just really struck by the simplicity of this church as you might drive by it and the intense beauty of it as you find yourself inside so i’d have to believe God is incredibly pleased with the worship that happens here and we know his goodness cannot be outdone that he pours out abundant graces through this church through this parish so I pray today that this grace can be what strengthens and what sanctifies all of our families so I wonder if i might be able to give you a challenge today if you think about your own family it’s probably a great family my question to you is is it a holy family is yours a holy family and does your part in this family make it that way or keep it from being that way what makes a holy family we hear some things in these readings children respect your parents it’s a message I think first to parents hold your children to some accountability of respectfulness to you of course we presume you carry yourself in a way that deserves your children’s respect but it’s also for the parents to hold their children to a standard to respect them and to not ex accept disrespect from children the other readings go on to say be good to each other these are the things that make a good family but it’s really in this gospel I think that we understand what makes a holy family and a holy family is this if you’re asking yourself is my family holy you can ask yourself do I love God the most do I love God the most not more than your brothers or sisters not more than your husband and wife most more than anybody else in your family including your husband or your wife your children your brothers and sisters that’s what makes a holy family loving God more than anybody anything else in our life and letting everybody and everything else be subordinate to that love

falls under that love means we respond to the promptings of the Lord we live the way he’s calling us to live loving the way Jesus himself loves if we go through the pages of scripture we find one page after another talking about this type of love when we read about it when we hear about it we’ll retell these accounts of those who have gone before us in the faith i’ll be honest some of them sound crazy but it is one account after another of those who love the Lord the most we have abraham our father in faith God gave him a great promise that his descendants would be many so what happens he finally in this old age has a son isaac and what does God call him to do give him back to sacrifice him it sounds absurd but abraham has this great love for God above his love for his son above his love for his wife which is great and he’s obedient and of course again the Lord and his goodness would not make him go through with a sacrifice like that and provides something else for the sacrifice abraham loved God the most we look at hannah and we just heard about her in one of the readings this last week she wanted a child more than anything she was in the temple praying to God crying that he would give her a child she finally conceived and what did she do she offered her son back to God she gave her son to the priests in the temple she loved God the most she trusted completely in God and of course in this gospel we had Mary and Joseph who had this incredible trust in God and love for him we hear this account this short version of the presentation to conceive Joseph listens to the prompting of the angel from the Lord and brings Mary into his home listens to the prompting of the Lord to the angel and flees for safety Mary and Joseph with this great love for God present him to God in the temple a little bit of a foreshadowing to give him back to the Lord that’s exactly what Jesus did gave himself back to the father to save all of us it’s what the crucifixion and resurrection is all about it’s the intensity of love when we love God the most we give him everything and he gives us back much much more in return so I hope I pray that yours also is a holy family holiness I think there’s a depth to it I think we continue to grow in holiness just like love it knows no limits holiness I think is a very similar thing our hearts when we’re in love continue to grow deeper and deeper in that way so I hope your love for the Lord is intense today I hope it grows deeper and deeper and I hope this mass today each mass from here can be a mass where you offer the sacrifice of thanks to God and you ask him for this ever deepening love for him so that we can continue to give everything we have to the Lord and at the same time receive all the more that he’s giving us back in return I believe in one God by the Holy Spirit is

bring those you refresh with this heavenly sacrament most merciful father to imitate constantly the example of the holy family so that after the trials of this world we may share their company forever through christ our Lord friday january 1st is the celebrity of Mary mother of God mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m on that day so i’m wondering if anybody is thinking that parts of that homily sounded very familiar so uh bishop Robert baron is a fantastic homilist and he puts his homilies online he does a little there’s a website I think he has a blog as well or what do you call a podcast where you can listen to his homilies for the upcoming sunday he puts him out a couple days ahead of time he’s just really really gifted so it’s wordonfire.com is one way you can find it so if you’ve never listened to his stuff before you might really like it so i encourage you to check it out some of the stuff I preach about might not sound as original if you do this because I listen to it all the time and he usually has at least something that you can pull out of there and might pop up in a homily or too but especially if you’re watching online maybe you could get someone to find that website for you and listen to it if you’re looking for some additional depth of homilies each week The Lord be with you. May almighty God bless you the father the son and the Holy Spirit. Go in peace [music] [music] me you so

so you
