good morning and a special welcome to all of you celebrating with us online

today we celebrate tuesday of the 19th week in ordinary time

our celebrant today is father hank i am mary beth and i will be serving as lecter this mass is being offered for the repose of the souls of anne narakage josephine nori and jay moore for those who are participating at home please silence your cell phones remember to speak their responses as if you are physically at mass and remember you are still very much connected to your parish home please join in now for three rounds of our jesus prayer lord jesus christ living son of the living god help me to trust more than ever that you are loving us right now lord jesus christ living son of the living god help me to trust more than ever that you are loving us right now lord jesus christ the living son of the living god help me to trust more than ever that you are loving us right now look to your covenant oh lord forget not the life of your poor ones forever arise o god defend your cause forget not the cries of those who seek you in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you so remember sunday’s gospel and poor peter and all that went into that moment when he sank and all that he had been doing before in poor elijah non-stop and readings and the season remind us let’s let’s give it a little bit of a rest and not in that condescending sort of hostile way when people say would you give it a rest no let’s do it in the loving way oh peter man oh man why did you doubt you of little faith let’s hear the voice of the loving savior call us lovingly to give it a rest and uh behind both readings today today in ezekiel and today in the gospel in both instances we are reminded yeah it there’s a time and a place for everything and a time to give it a rest whatever it the it is that seems to overwhelm us and for the ways in which we persist when that’s not what god is asking of us for the ways perhaps in which we don’t take that step back that enables us to let god’s light shine in whatever ways in which we’ve committed sins we acknowledge our sin we entrust ourselves to god’s mercy as we pray you were sent to heal the contrite of heart lord have mercy you came to call sinners christ have mercy you are seated at the right hand of the father to intercede for us lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sin and bring us to the everlasting life let us pray almighty ever-living god taught by the holy spirit we dare to call you our father bring we pray to perfection in our hearts the spirit of adoption as your sons and daughters that we may merit to enter into the inheritance you have promised through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever a reading from the book of the prophet ezekiel the lord god said to me as for you son of man obey me when i speak to you be not rebellious like this house of rebellion but open your mouth and eat what i shall give you it was then when i saw a hand stretched out to me in which was a written scroll which he unrolled before me it was covered with writing front and back and written on it was lamentation and wailing and woe he said to me son of man eat what is before you eat this scroll then go speak to the house of israel so i opened my mouth and he gave me the scroll to eat son of man he then said to me feed your belly and fill your stomach with the scroll i am giving you i ate it and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth he said son of man go now to the house of israel and speak my words to them the word of the lord thanks be to god the responsorial psalm how sweet to my taste is your promise how sweet to my taste is your promise in the way of your decrees i rejoice as

much as in all riches how sweet to my tastes is your promise yes your decrees are my delight they are my counselors how sweet my taste is your promise the law of your mouth is to me more precious than thousands of gold and silver pieces how sweet to my taste is your promise how sweet to my palate are your promises sweeter than honey to my mouth how sweet to my taste is your promise your decrees are my inheritance forever the joy of my heart they are how sweet to my taste is your promise i gasp with open mouth in my yearning for your commands how sweet to my taste is your promise take my yoke upon you and learn from me for i am meek and humble of heart alleluia the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew the disciples approached jesus and said who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven he called the child over placed it in their midst and said amen i say to you unless you turn and become like children you will not enter the kingdom of heaven whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me see that you do not despise one of these little ones for i say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly father what is your opinion if a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray will he not leave the 99 in the hills and go in search of that stray and if he finds it amen i say to you he rejoices more over it than over the 99 that did not stray in just the same way it is not the will of your heavenly father that one of these little ones be lost the gospel of the lord so today um brings us into the question that an age-old spiritual question of and we find it in the old testament the new testament what’s the difference between a hoedown and a hootenanny do you ever think of that that what’s the difference between a hoedown and a hootenanny well before we can get to really identifying the difference between a hoedown and a hootenanny uh we need to clear the definition of what’s a hoedown and where did the name hoedown come from well you put your hoe down at the end of the day when you’re hoeing um and it’s an appalachian thing mostly probably northern west virginia or even in ohio is probably where it got going within the places where it’s in the appalachian mountains it’s almost there’s patches that are flat enough to farm but not big enough and flat enough to bring in farming equipment so it relies much more on hand tools like hose like you hoe by hand and so when it’s time to put the hoe down that means work is over and it’s time to go have some fun but putting the hoe down is just such a great symbol of all those ways in which we’re asked just to stop and put the work down and put the projects down and and and put the ambitions down right and so we can take that notion of the hoe down which symbolizes just manual labor and we stop doing that on our own little subsistence farm there in in eastern ohio or we can put it more in the context of the bigger invitation to put the hoe down to stop doing whatever we’re doing the productive stuff and so in the gospel i’m sorry in the first reading today in ezekiel the story with ezekiel is that ezekiel is the first prophet to be commissioned outside of what we call the holy land outside of the land of israel and uh israel and judah so ezekiel happened to be one of those who was deported in the first wave of deportations by king nebuchadnezzar after the assault on jerusalem and so ezekiel and his wife are over there in in babylon and ezekiel gets the call we would have heard it yesterday except for we had the feast and because of the feast we didn’t get to we use the readings for the day we used the um the readings for the feast itself and so the story with today is we pick

up after that missing piece we pick up the the story today with ezekiel getting the commission and it’s a symbol there eat this scroll in other words ezekiel make these words part of who you are so eat this scroll let it let it be part of you and you consume it and you and the word of god become sort of meshed in a way that you can’t separate okay and the major message is people you should have put the hoe down on that silly project of trying to line up with the egyptians and the assyrians when nebuchadnezzar was on his way to knock the dust out of your city you got so stuck on it you couldn’t even back off and say wow is that a good idea or is that not a good idea remember the other prophets were telling them you can’t put your faith in political alliances but you got so obsessed with it you got so consumed by it you never got to the point where you could put it down and say gosh i wonder what it is god wants me to do here right your ambitions got the best of you and now here is ezekiel telling them in captivity well okay you didn’t listen the first time but god still loves you maybe you’ll get it this time you got to put the hoe down you got it you got you got to let go of some of those those obsessions of yours and maybe obsessions is too strong a word or maybe not because you’re getting all caught up in things that don’t have a whole lot to do with god’s hopes so maybe can you take some distance on that and just ask is this what god wants in the gospel today the story starts off with a similar thing of ambitions who’s going to be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven and we know this is something that comes back time and time again it happens here in matthew’s gospel it happens in luke’s gospel it happens remember when the mother of two of the disciples comes and says who’s going to get the best seat next to your throne jesus just has to be rolling his eyes poor guy like you don’t get it that’s that’s that’s not what we’re about here and still this ambition of yours um maybe it’s gotten a little bit carried away and you need to put it down step back take a look is that an ambition that’s of god friends i’d ask you to notice that one rule from the spiritual exercises for the rules for the discernment of spirits it comes to us um in the rules for this discernment of um the sec after the second week of the spiritual exercises and ignatius talks about the angel of darkness marauding as the angel of light one more time the angel of darkness marauding great word as the angel of light in other words we get these ideas that seem to be really of god they seem to be holy they seem to line up with god’s hopes until we take a deeper look and then we realize wow that just on the surface looks like a good idea in terms of jesus and his hopes but when i dig down i see that’s not a good idea that’s not even a little bit of a good idea right the angel of darkness maraudes as the angel of light and that is it the way it goes sometimes even with our own ambitions our own aspirations and our own hopes that the way it works is sometimes we get so caught up in them this is a good idea i’ve got to achieve this goal okay let’s put the hoe down let’s take a look let’s go and see is this good idea or is this not a good idea so i’d ask you to notice the ways perhaps in which one way in which you’re resolving the jumble for yourself or for someone else might need that second look maybe your commitment to another person your commitment to a helping project your commitment to making the world a better place listen no one’s going to fault us for having those the only thing where we find fault is if we don’t put it down step back take a look can you name one way in which well maybe that is the angel of darkness marauding is the angel of light one way in which you need to put the project down take a look wonder about it just a little bit and chances are it’s going to be exactly something god wants but we’ve got to take a look where do you need to put the hoe down the prayers of the faithful for that ability to uh get that more objective look at what seem like inspired ideas we pray to the lord for patience with ourselves and a sense of humor and a sense of god’s magnificence and intervention and appreciation as we take those those long loving looks at those things that seem to consume our efforts we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that we can be gentle with one another as we help each other wonder about wow is that of god or is that not of god is that egos that ambition is that weirdness is it something else that we can be good conversation partners in the spiritual conversations we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for everybody um who’s feeling the pinch of uh the economic pinch of the pandemic let’s have a special prayer for them today we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for folks
