03 04 05 Yamaha R6 Gauge Cluster Mod – LED Color Swap – Inverted Polarizing Film

hey what’s up YouTube I want to make a video I’m explaining how to do the LED color swap and also how to flip the polarizing film to invert the display so I’m gonna film this video in a couple different parts do the best that I can to cover you know everything that I’ve learned and I know about it so yeah right now my gauges are green on the display side in blue on the tax side so I’m gonna go ahead and move the flashlight away and you can kind of see what they look like at night and in the dark I’m gonna kind of get closer yeah so you can see you have green on the display and blue on the tach so yeah I’m gonna go ahead and cut this off and then show you another gauge cluster that I bought on eBay for 25 bucks that I’ve just been experimenting with so yeah I’m gonna go ahead and just get one more exposure here showing the kind of what it looks like during the day you know you can see it’s blue and then uh kind of fade out and then you’ll be able to see what it looks like in pitch black and try to get closer so you can see it oh yeah that’s the gist of it I’m gonna go ahead and cut this off and skip to the next part okay so here we are a part two of my video I’m gonna go ahead and zoom in a little bit you can see the gauge cluster is out of the housing and on the right yoga display and then in the center you have your stepper motor for the tack so I’m gonna go ahead and turn on the key it might blow out the highlights on the camera a little bit but then again it’s it’s totally fine because this is just a youtube video and that’s just what’s gonna happen on my iPhone so here we go and turn on the key and you can see got it in first gear cuz the neutral light really blows out the highlights but yeah there’s 14 LEDs on there 10 for the for the tack and then forward for the LCD so I’m gonna take the flashlight away and then I’m gonna bring in this piece of polarizing film I’m gonna show you the pores in film right here this polarizing film is for a Samsung Galaxy s3 so yeah this is pretty cool this is probably gonna be the better part of this video so yeah so you can see right here with the blue display it’s not showing anything right now and as I bring this film in you’ll be able to see the numbers you see that as I bring in the film see that that’s like a light filter and that’s what that’s what creates the image on the display so as I rotate this film you can see it becomes inverted and that’s that’s the goal right there is to have bright numbers and a black display so you can see as I turn it as I turn it it inverts it so yeah that’s it’s pretty sweet right there I’ll do it fast okay so I want to get one more shot of this because before I was sort of filming through the film and not at the film so I’m gonna try and see if I can get a little bit better shot for you guys so he was like through the film like when I am filming through the film but I want to get it by close like right up against it and see the reason there’s fingerprints on there cuz that’s a sticky part of the glue so I’m gonna have to find a different source to buy this polarizing foam because in order for it to work the sticky side needs to be up whereas on iPhone the sticky side is down so I thought I’d be able to use this film but I’m gonna have to find something else so anyway like if I get it close yeah you can see here hold on getting one second I’m actually gonna set the camera down without cutting it and I’m gonna I’m gonna try and I’m gonna take my sweatshirt off it’s super cool that I’m gonna win a black black out this green side she’s gonna be one second okay perfect so yeah here I’m back

where’s my comb at so yeah now that we don’t have the green blowing out the blue so bad see if it’ll focus okay I think that’s about it’s good focuses we’re gonna get here I come with the phone yeah that’s a excellent shot excuse my language I’m not gonna edit that out but that’s a good shot right there compared to before so yeah I’m just gonna slide it down slow you can see that’s what makes the image that’s the point I’m trying to convey so yeah that’s a pretty good shot and then you can see as I rotate it that’s what I’m going for right there it’s being very quois and trust me it looks a hundred times better in person but uh yeah I’m pretty happy with this video so far so I’m gonna rotate this super slow to kind of show the filter effect and okay I think I’m satisfied with that so I’m gonna go ahead and cut this off okay so here we are at part three I’m not really sure what I’m gonna say or how long it’s gonna take but it’s gonna be sweet for sure um I’m then stop saying um so much as well but I can’t think of what to say but anyway I hate YouTube videos that are professional and to the point I just want to see a real prison doing a real project so anyway let’s get into it yeah I have to I have to do this all with one hand so I’m gonna do it the best that I can but you’re not gonna find another video out there like this so just if you watched it this far you’re probably gonna watch the whole thing but anyway okay so here’s the 2005 Yamaha r6 gauge cluster I bought this cluster on eBay for 25 bucks it was lifted at 50 bucks I made an offer for 25 and the seller accepted you can see the the glass lens is busted out I feel like somebody like like they crashed in there their helmet busted out the glass and then also impacted the needle and you can see the needle is like it’s like it’s like you can see it’s like a stepper motor like you can see like you can hear it click it’s cuz I it was originally working but it was in a bind and so I thought the reason it was in a bind was because of the plastic was it got impacted in that you’ll see the plastic got mashed so I thought if I cut out that plastic that it would start working better will that ruined it like this this has to be centered like this needs to like flow in there like for it to like pull this really pulled away like for the electromagnets away so anyway like this is just my damaged experiment clusters so basically you would take out you would take out I don’t know how many screws will let see two four six I think there’s eight screws on the back but anyway you take this off and so there’s the inside and then right here on the side it was water damaged which I don’t really care about I got this for super cheap but um I don’t know if my iPhones gonna focus very well I’m gonna try and refocus things as I go but okay so yeah then you have this screw right here there’s one more screw so yeah I’ve got it over here my screws yeah so there’s like the 12 screws and then here is the screw for this plastic piece right here so okay so that you take that screw out and then even before then you should just be able to take this off I’m gonna flip it over like this and then you can see this just comes off really easy with no resistance okay so there’s the cluster and excuse me it’s gonna I’m gonna have to keep refocusing this and I’ll try and hold the camera steady but again I’m doing this with one hand and I don’t really care so usually what I do is I put these rolls of solder down like this and then I just put the cluster up on here so now like I’ve seen people pull this out with a fork I’m gonna try this with a fork I’ve never tried like I could probably just pull it out by hand but I’m gonna go grab before you so let’s see music work and I’m just gonna I’m gonna pop this up okay yeah sweet that was badass okay so there’s the needle I’ve seen people to paint these needles

like this paint on there you could probably paint that but this whole needle is orange so anyway there’s your needle okay so now once you have the needle out I’m gonna flip this back over and on some clusters they have like a security LED right here which this cluster doesn’t have it but those would be the two contacts so the desoldering the the desoldering could potentially start right now well I don’t have that so which is nice so all you have to do is you just push on this tab right here super easy anything look it just comes right off like that so yeah that’s your face plate right there and then watch I’ll put the faceplate and see this part of the cluster okay yeah so that just fits in there like so okay okay that’s a little fiddly but yeah you can see so that fits in there like that and this housing is pretty beat up you can buy a new housing from China for $21 so anyway okay back to our circuit here so yeah you’ve got your one screw and then you’ve got your needle and then your faceplate okay so next talk about okay so before I was talking about the stepper motor you can see that I cut out that plastic that’s not a good idea that ruin the stepper motor you can buy these stepper motors for GM vehicles for like ten bucks and I wish I could find one because then this cluster would work like this cluster I bought it on eBay idiot it matches my mileage almost identical my bike has 23,000 miles and this gauge cluster has 23,000 miles so that’s pretty good anyway I want to pull up a seat here and try and study this camera so yeah look these are the LEDs right here and you can see like when i zoom in you can see cathode and anode so that’s the the LEDs are are polarized the directional so you have to solder them on there the crack where they won’t work and I might be able to show it it’s already gonna wanna zoom in but there’s like a little triangle cut out too that shows that’s the that’s the positive side so and you can just look like you can just see two like like you you can kind of see like the little the little like see I’m gonna try and get it in focus like if you look at the LED close you might not be able to see it on camera but it has kind of like you can you can just match you can just match the old led to the new LED I might have some old LEDs in here I don’t want to wait too much time but inside my soldering station you can see some samsung galaxy s3s s3 charging ports and on some picking place ribbons but yeah like here’s some the old LEDs look slightly different than then the new LEDs but yeah like they’re anyway it has like a triangular recess and you’ll be able to matching up figuring out the cathode in the inner it is not really that hard so enough time on that okay what do I want to cover next okay so these are a 35-28 LED and i think it’s because it’s three point five millimeters by two point eight millimeters but yeah it’s a 35-28 enough 5050 LED is also really common so yeah lets see i cover the stepper motor i’ve covered this yeah let me cover the display okay so basically you want to solder you want to desolder this 10 right here there’s 10 LEDs for this side and then i’m gonna maybe i’ll try and peel off this red tape okay so the reason the red tape is on there is to divide the colors if you have two colors you get white wicked you’ll see blue on the green side and green on the blue side so here let me for a second and I’m gonna I’m gonna get this tape off and then you’ll be able to see the other LEDs yeah okay this is kind of gonna be on camera hopefully hopefully my phone doesn’t run out of space otherwise I’m gonna have to cut this okay I’m on this this is like 3m double-sided tape is pretty strong so I’m gonna peel the red stuff off I’m gonna get it in focus to here I’m gonna put the solder so yeah I might not have the total height yeah I can do like that okay so I’m gonna try and get this off of here so you can see what I’m talking about it’s gonna be a pain in the ass hopefully doesn’t take me too long and I’m not gonna tear it

I’m not gonna like rush it and scratch out my and then regret it so yeah I’m gonna get this off of here and then you’ll be able to see what the I’m talking about so yeah this was a good idea that I had to divide the codes if you do one color you don’t have to put this on there to prevent light leakage well yeah so look I got this off a year now and now you can see you can see there’s four LEDs under there I’m gonna point to them hopefully look I’m gonna try and stay in the camera focus okay yeah so you’ve got four LEDs on be there one two three four so you might be able to get your soldering iron in there without soldering the 30 pins right here look you see these 30 pins okay yeah so there’s if you want to pause this as you go to look at that’s what I’m trying to get it in focus for people because I do that all the time and so here I’m gonna flip it over there but yeah you can see this this 30 pins right there that you have to desolder so basically what I do is I take this Kapton tape and yeah okay so here’s the here’s the castle on tape it’s yellow this is gonna be I’m gonna stick it on here just for to show you what kind of what you need to do okay yeah so I put this Kapton tape on here just to kind of keep the flux down for the most part I’m you know I’m not really gonna burn any traces or scratch anything up but I do put Kapton tape on there and all right this is where it gets good okay so this right here is the cat’s ass hopefully you watch the video up to this point okay this right here is called chip quick chip quick house is a is a is a desoldering alley yeah I’ll get that in focus SMD one yeah chip quick is really good stuff it’s uh it comes with like some alcohol pads which probably are not gonna clean the flux the flux turns to like thick goo it’s really hard to get off but yeah you could probably throw those away that’s like alcohol pads you don’t need but it comes with this special fox you don’t really need that but this chip quick is pretty good stuff so so yeah and this chip quick is really brutal so basically that what the chip wit does is it has a really low melting point of like a hundred degrees like a hundred degrees Fahrenheit I don’t know what the Celsius is but see it’s like it’s really brittle I don’t know this won’t be your focus but it just snaps right off so basically what you can do is you can take like a I just take tweezers like where’s the camera okay so so yeah I basically just take my tweezers like this it might not be in focus I’ll go here well yeah and just snap a piece off okay so now that I have that piece snapped off I’m gonna flip the board over and I’m going to turn on my soldering iron okay this is my this is my 862 d-plus hot area station so yeah I just click it on like this I usually keep it around 295 it’s got a hot air wand this is the hot air side you can see you have your your air speed your temperature oh yeah okay so the iron’s hot no should be hot oh it’s is it plugged in yeah okay it’s on all my shit’s going okay so basically you just want to clean the tip I’ll try and get this in focus pretty close well yeah so just clean the tip like this why is that not melting oh it’s off again okay sorry I don’t want to waste too much time on this but like I need that to come on so whenever it comes off we’ll get going just crank it way up to like 320 to get this melted off here on odds

it’s see how it blinks like that and then the temperature goes up okay yeah so now here it’s it’s molten so yeah you just clean your iron off yeah I’m gonna put some fresh fruit on there okay so yeah let’s see I’m gonna put some put some fresh can you see that all right all right yeah so there’s my solder now that I got some fresh solder in there I can get this old shirt off sorry I should have cleaned my iron before I do this but I do want to show this okay yeah so now you can see that all the nasty is off my soldering iron see like I’ve added this chisel tip it’s pretty nice and clean like see I can pick this up and I’m not gonna wait on that okay so this is my mg chemicals solder flux right here the iron back in here for a second I’m gonna just set things up give me like give me 20 seconds and I’ll have my workspace organized okay so yeah I’m gonna show how to stop desolder this LED right here so it’s pretty simple and this cheap quick is some badass okay so here is my I’m probably get my phone is either gonna die or I’m pregnant out of space but we’ll see how far I can get okay get the out of the package oh yeah you got your mg chemicals you can pause that I’m not gonna spend too much time but yeah okay so here’s the mg chemicals flux no it says no clean but that just means it’s not acidic you definitely need to clean that off the board so I’m trying to focus this I’m gonna like do it like looking through the camera and not at what I’m doing so I’m probably gonna put a big-ass blob of flux on you so yeah okay there’s a little bit of flux and then I’ll zoom in and you’ll get a good shot of it after I after I do it so and there’s another little ball of flux okay so there you’ve got your on there I’m gonna bring the iron in sorry this is I’m gonna try not to be shaky but yeah you can see sometimes I just kind of like to just spread it a little bit okay so now it’s flexed okay so a little bit see it’s hard for me to like either look through the camera or like what will actually look at what the I’m trying to do so here’s this is kind of a big piece but this is just for demonstration purposes so yeah that’s what you need to do so there’s your cat’s ass blow to Bali he’s soldering and then there’s your mg chemicals flux on there so now all you have to do is look the reason the reason you need to load some Ally especially on that 30 pin connection is because it stays molten for so long so you just mix it in like this just working into both sides and then yeah I see what it’s already ready to come off see that and then look look look at how long it stays molten for it like see look I can still move it still move it still move it still move it still move it still move it so that’s what’s nice about that is like what the 30 pins like that’s why it’s so nice like my my iron is that is that 325 degrees and look it’s still molding you see that so it gives you plenty time to get it off the board so yeah look it’s still molding okay there it is see you didn’t just set up okay so that’s nice and usually it doesn’t fall off like that and I don’t even need to desolder it but I’ll show you the I’ll show you how to clean your pads real quick if I can so I don’t know what I’m gonna cut this desoldering braid with but let me see if I can just get it employees and gonna show you how the desoldering braid wicks up the solder it’s it’s pretty simple I’m just gonna

set my phone down I think it’s pretty well in focus I’m just gonna go for it it’s at the bottom but that’s how it’s gonna because my phone is gonna fall if it’s any more angle so yeah you just take the desoldering braid in here and then like that this absorbs into the braid like you see how like like I can get the pads really clean like that so that’s all you have to do is that uh basically the this wick it just that’s what it is it just wicks up the solder into it that’s how you clean your cards and then so they’re very clean Pat’s cathode and anode okay so where the where’s the LED I I’m just gonna solder one of these other LEDs on there I don’t even know so yeah real quick I could just look at the LED and figure out which way it goes on there this is an old OED so this one’s are red but then all you have to do just set it on there it’s basically the same process but I’ll show you real quick it’s really simple so yeah there’s your LEDs no solder and then all you have to do clean your iron and then you don’t really want to do it you don’t want to solder it back with the load symbolic is it’s kind of shitty it’s not sure you but it’s a it’s my my solder rolls are holding up are holding up my are holding on my flux so I’m just gonna look all I’m gonna do is I just cut this piece off and then this is let it solder and I’m just gonna put some leaded solder on there and then i’ll solder this led in place I might need some more flux but it I probably don’t even need more flux it’s really simple so yeah like I mean I just did this like that would probably work right there I mean if somebody’s thinking about doing this it’s really not hard so yeah like and then watch this like this is how you can Center up the LED is if you just get it hot on both sides like like and it’s it’s a little bit harder with the I probably still have some Lord set value on there but that’s that’s basically the gist of it is just you want to get it Center and that’s it and yeah see so when I have both sides molten the surface tension of the solder will pull it right into place like you don’t even need tweezers so – you see how I’m like I’m making it dance like that and it just goes back to the same spot so you don’t even need tweezers to like Center you can just use the surface tension of the solder so yeah that’s about it in a nutshell so I mean and I kind of did that fast and a little ghetto but I mean if you’re at your house you can do it perfect so now like all zoom in on that like it’s a like that’s a decent solder joint I mean yeah I mean that’s good enough my other ones are all really straight and perfect like I did a really good job like they all look really nice on the board and I do I did leave any flux on there and so yeah that’s that’s about it and now you could just take some alcohol and a toothbrush and and and clean that off so look this one there’s only one more thing that I want to show and that’s that’s this polarizing film one more time so like I showed it on the bike but um see it’s really hard for me to film reflective surfaces like I need a needs to reflect off against the wall okay so now I don’t have anything like showing up in the reflection so yeah okay so there there you can see okay it’s gonna be a little shiny okay there that’s pretty good so yeah you can see how it inverts it like that but that’s the thing though is like this film is this this film is sticky on top right here it’s sticky like you see how it sticks to my fingers so I want this sticky side down but this is this film isn’t this is for a samsung galaxy s3 LCD so look if I try and put it on this way it doesn’t look perfectly clear like you see how it’s like you see how it’s really clear like that like that that has no distortion but when I flip it over if I were to put the sticky side down it kind of has like a like it’s got a little shadow in there but it kind of has like a green or a blue tinge to it so in depending on yeah you see that like oranges tinge to that I’m getting like so that’s why I can’t put the film sticky side down I need to find some different film or and I try to clean this film I can’t get this adhesive off and then use loca glue you guys don’t know what loca is but I can’t use iPhone we’ll cut to glue this piece on there so I’m just gonna have to find a different source for the film’s so yeah like that

right here like like I used like I used most of the I use most of the scripts ready so like I got pretty good at soldering like you can see like that whole strip is empty blue blue is almost gone I saw of all the yellow yeah this see look the white is like a little bit different than yellow in the middle whereas the other ones are colored but yeah I pretty much blew through all the green all the blue so yeah I’m pretty happy I bought a hundred LEDs for 10 bucks so yeah I’m pretty happy I did both my clusters a couple different times and I think what my plan is now is to put white I want to do I want to do these four white and then invert the colors I mean it looked pretty cool with blue but I want to do white and then and then and and then do my film invert the film so that way that this way is dark and the numbers are are bright so anyway back to the album okay so this is the pic that we were on so yeah there’s the stepper motor before I cut it before I cut out before I cut more of it out thinking that that would help in it used to work like this it was just sticky and then when I cut it out cut more out thinking I’d to free it up then they basically just quit working altogether so don’t do that if you’re ever in your cluster but yeah so there’s the chip quick I bought from suburban electronics there’s some water damage on the cluster that I clean when I first got it Sarge I’m a little shaking a little trying to be a little steady so yeah there’s yeah I bought it with 23,000 miles which was that’s great it was super close to what my bike has there’s my new cluster like I said you can buy a new a new housing from China for 20 bucks yeah that’s a good picture there’s the there’s your LCD you with the polarizing film like your LCD holder and then that’s like a gradient light diffuser like see how it’s like darker lighter lighter that’s what makes so even land shade for the display that’s like your backlighting so you have you have your light diffuser which goes underneath this plastic piece and then on top this this gray silvery background fits in and then this is totally clear with your numbers so that’s basically how it goes together you have like four pieces again there’s the display like the housing the light did the gradient light diffuser and then you’re so very background so yeah like there it is there’s another shot of it and I can even like zoom in on in and you can see the acetone kind of ruined the the polarizing film before so don’t use acetone on this film I can use acetone on iPhones but it kind of messed up this film but then again this is my experiment cluster so I don’t really care but yeah there’s the gradient light diffuser there’s your silver background and then there’s the display installed the Kapton tape and your 30 pins that you have to desolder you and then there’s the blue and green and then yeah then you can see I put the red tape to divide the colors you can see the needle kind of sits in there sideways and then there it is at night and then with a little bit of flashlight and then yeah you can see there’s the blue and the green and then the green and the blue so but yeah that pretty much covers the album and it’s better for me just to fill my computer and then post a link to it so that way I can explain them rather than trying to just do it all in Final Cut Pro so yeah that’s pretty much concludes my video you
